Clementine's Official First Birthday Post

Here are a few facts about Clementine on her first birthday: 

She weighs 24.3lbs and is 30 inches long

She can cruise around the furniture, but isn't fully walking yet. She loves climbing stairs! She can go down as well, but doesn't know to turn around backwards at the top, so you have to help her with that part. 

She babbles a lot, and even says some words. "Da-da" means "Dad", "Ma-ma" means both "Mom" and "More food please!", "Ba-ba" means "bottle" and "drink". She says "aaaaa-da!" which is "all done". She also points as things and asks "a-zat?" in an inquisitive tone, which we think means "what's that?"

She loves to growl and blow raspberries at everything.

She loves playing peek-a-boo. 

When she hears music, she claps and smiles and rocks and shakes her head. 

She goes to bed at 7pm and sleeps until 7am, and usually takes 2 naps during the day. (But if she skips a nap, it ain't no thang...she's easy!)

She loves to play with babies and little people and blocks. 

She loves to eat cheese, peas, and fruit. 

She is LOUD!!!

For Clementine's first birthday, I decided to go the easy route for the birthday party. I figured if I were to plan a party, I'd invite our Lifegroup, so I figured I'd just sing happy birthday and give her cake at Lifegroup and call it good. After all, we have every toy imaginable, so we certainly don't need to have people bring gifts! Also, I'm a smart one, and I asked my friend, Brenda, to host! See how tricky I am!? It was fun to get to celebrate Clementine's birthday with 40 of our closest friends!

Mylea's birthday is the day before Clementine's, so Brenda found the decorations from Mylea's first birthday party, and put them out! Clementine got to wear Mylea's party hat, which was really special!

I figured since Mylea's birthday was close, we should sing her happy birthday. I even had a 1 candle and a 4 candle!

I saw this thing on Pinterest recently where you use a cookie cutter to put sprinkles on a cake in the shape of the number they're turning. I thought it was super cute and thought I'd do it instead of a candle. Turns out, the number 1 just looks like a blob. Happy blob birthday, baby girl!

She started out slow, just tasting.

Eventually she got a little messy, but never really ate very much of it.

But she obviously enjoyed it!

Then on Clementine's real birthday, a few days later, we were waiting for Jim to get home so that we could open presents. Clementine decided to chase the Nuts.

Lily and Grace passed the time by wrestling...

...and being robot monsters. It's one of their favorite games.

She actually get one gift early. This doll was from Grandma Lala and Grandpa Steve, and she saw it on the counter when we got home from the store, and she SCREAMED until she got it, and then wouldn't let it go. In fact, she had trouble going to sleep that night because she was so worked up about her doll. Lily and Grace both have a Circo doll like this, so now all three girls have their own!

Then we crawled up and down the stairs a few hundred times.

Finally Daddy got home, and we were able to open gifts!

This is how babies open clothing. They grab it and fling it out of the box at lightening speed. Thanks uncle Clay and aunt Shyla!

Goo's Birthday Party

On Saturday afternoon we had Grace's first birthday party! Her birthday isn't (wasn't) for another week, but since we'll be traveling on her actual birthday, and since Grandma Lala was in town, we decided to have it this weekend. Since Goo was born, I've been excited for her summer birthday so that we could have an outside party. It was windy and cool all morning, and we weren't sure if the weather was going to want to cooperate with us, but by 4:00 it was perfectly warm, but not hot, and the wind had died down. Yay! The plan was to have a cookout with 40 or so of our best friends, and have some back yard games and that sort of thing. Everything went well, and a good time was had by all (as far as I know). I have, oh about a zillion pictures to share, so I'll cut the chatter.

We had to wake Lily up from a much needed, way to late in the day nap. She was pretty grumpy, but after some time at the "grandma" table (with Mary, Deloris, and Grandma Lala) she cheered up.

The games start! The first one was the old egg-in-the spoon race. I'm explaining the concept to the littlest group.
Julianna, Lily, Elijah, Jimmy, and Owen were all ready to go!
Lily dropped and stepped upon her egg right off the bat. That was the moment when I realized, "I should have boiled more than 5 eggs!"

Now it was the older kids' turn. They had to go in heats since we were down to only four eggs.

The second heat, which was a tie between Nathan and Caleb. And this was the moment when I realized I needed to have more ribbons than just enough for one winner per race. Now I know why the soccer coaches give a trophy to every kid. :)

There were only two 4 and under's who wanted to participate in the potato sack race; Lily and Julianna. And by the way, you will never in your life see anything more precious than these two potato sack racing. Not really racing, just doing it together. Waiting for each other, and making sure to fall down when the other falls down. Adorable!

We're buddies!
Time for the Oreo race everyone!
So here's a funny story. We were playing the Minute To Win It game where you stick an Oreo on your head, and then contort your face until you get it in your mouth. I decided to do a quick demonstration so that everyone got the idea. I'd never done it before, but I stuck it on my head, scrunched my face a bit, and about 5 seconds later, I caught the Oreo in my mouth. Easy as pie! Well, I really made it look easy, but it was just luck because it took everyone else a couple of minutes to get theirs in their mouths. I wish I'd been on Minute To Win It! I'd have won some MONEY! :)

Here is our older kid winner, Thomas. Except he won in silence, and I had to be told later that he'd actually won like 10 minutes ago (yeah, it took about that long to get a winner) but that he hadn't said anything. So good job Thomas!
Zoe was our eventual winner, which cracked me up because she spent the whole time using her hands, until the very last try, and then she won!

Grace was entranced by baby Lydia. Whenever she came near, Grace would go crazy and smile and wave her arms and grunt, and want to grab her. It was pretty sweet.

All in all it was a very fun party, and I'm thankful for all the friends and family who came to celebrate Grace's first year. We are so blessed to have you all in our life!
